The Type 3 was the first mid-range model from Volkswagen and was presented in 1961 in a notchback, hatchback and Variant version. This series quickly became a bestseller, especially as a Variant, and 2.6 million vehicles was produced. Due to the 1.5 and 1.6 liter engines, these cars were called 1500 or 1600 and at a price of 6550 DM at the time, it was the next step from a Beetle to a Sedan with proven technology for many Volkswagen customers.
